Jan. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- That is the suggestion of a new report, which has pointed out that the energy inefficiencies of older properties mean that their owners are likely to have a pay an extra £250 on their fuel bills each year.

According to figures compiled by the Energy Saving Trust, the typical Victorian home, with its uninsulated walls and single glazing, will generate an annual gas bill of £670, while owners can expect to pay £340 a year for their electricity.

In comparison, owners of new-build properties can see their yearly gas bills fall as low as £400, should they take the time to compare energy suppliers and switch to the cheapest deal.

What's more, older homes have an average carbon footprint of five tonnes of CO2 a year, compared to 3.4 tonnes for new builds, the figures also show.

As well as switching suppliers to get the best gas and electricity rates, owners of Victorian properties are advised to block any unused chimneys and any gaps between floorboards so as to reduce draughts.
