Great American Artists like Charlie Harper, the "Highway Men" and Miami's own folk artist, Purvis Young, exhibits open alongside local emerging artists. The Florida highway men (and women) artists were trained primarily in north Florida and sold their art during the 1950-60's out of their cars on the highway as their works were not considered "suitable" for commercial galleries; now these same works are collector's items and highly prized. Charlie Harper, an American illustrator who quietly created a bright and colorful legacy of Middle America 'Americana,' has not had an opening before in South Florida. His pieces are whimsical portrayals of animals, cultural events and include a biblical art series. Todd Oldham, designer, and the Ford Motor Company among other household name corporations have published numerous books on his works. While Harper and his wife and fellow painter, Edie, were classically trained in the arts and in their golden years - they are a perfect foil to the local and regional emerging artists whose paintings and creations demonstrate the creative spirit and gritty spirit of today's South Florida youth and art from the 'street.' Over fifty (50) local artists and crafters will be showcased this year. The original Miami folk artist, Purvis Young, helped found the festival in 2006 will also have a featured exhibition of his art.
