I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change marks the first musical he has directed for The Relevant Stage. Taylor has had extensive directing credits of plays at various regional theaters.
In his directors notes, Taylor had this to say about his production of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.
"After more than over a year long association with the Relevant Stage Company, I was honored that Ray Buffer accepted my offer to direct the reprise of I Love You Your Perfect Now Change (ILYYPNC) as the company’s spring production. The more I delved into the script and score, I realized the mastery of the book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music of Jimmy Roberts. I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is the second longest running Off Broadway production. It was first written in 1996 but the truths of the situations are as poignant today as they were then. It has since been translated into 13 languages including Hebrew, Spanish, Dutch, Hungarian, Czech, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, German, Catalan, Finnish and Mandarin."
"ILYYPNC is presented in the form of a series of vignettes, connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play's tagline is "Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit." With few exceptions, the scenes stand independent of the others, but progress in a fashion designed to suggest an overall arc to relationships throughout the course of one's life. ILYYPNC chronicles the various facets of relationships, starting with the uncertainty of first dates through to the ultimate end of all relationships. The musical, in a very humorous and honest way, touches on the many aspects of perhaps all our lives. There are, I feel, aspects of this production which will resonate with all audience members young and old, as they have for me, irrespective of their current relationship status. As with all productions, none of what you see on stage would have been possible without a cadre of support from others."
"My cast is tremendous, some of whom are new to The Relevant Stage family and some who have been seen on stage before. ILYYPNC is an ensemble piece of theatre and could not have been done without the support of their fellow actors."
"I have also been fortunate to be surrounded with a production and technical crew who have worked so hard on the mounting of such a deceptively simple piece. What you will see on stage is a synchronicity of all the work that they have put into it."
"Considerable thanks must also go to Ray Buffer the Artistic Director of The Relevant Stage as well as Lee Sweet the General Manager of The Warner Grand and his Technical Director Bob Estrada."
"We are all fortunate to be sitting in one of the last surviving examples of Art Deco architecture commissioned by Jack Warner and now owned and managed by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs."
These live performances star: Daina Bowler, Ray Buffer, Paul Rorie, Kenneth Taylor, Kristin Towers-Rowles and Melissa Villasenor. Jeanette-Louise Yaryan (piano) and Adrian Wong (viola) provide the live, musical accompaniment.
Taylor closes saying, "I hope you enjoy what we have all crafted for you."
