It is in common practice to leave a financial will so why would it seem so far off to think of leaving more of a legacy for your children and loved ones to hang on to? It dawned on life coach and Organizational Development expert Jivi Khehra in a big way. She realized that although financial wills are important on a tangible level leaving a record of your life’s experiences, lessons and stories are priceless. It is a way to create one’s immortality.
“As my parents aged and the circle of life became more and more evident, I wanted to ensure that we captured their life lessons and the values that they hold close to their heart. I bought my father a voice dictator so that he could capture in words how he wanted to be remembered by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. At the end of the day their children and grand children are not going to remember the money they had or gave to us. They will want to hold on to the essence of who they were as people. Building a value legacy preserves those stories and experiences of your life. “My Aunt was one of the first few Indo- Canadian women to live in the Lower Mainland,” says Jivi. “She lived such a legacy and I remember thinking to myself that my children will miss her life stories and her experience so I wanted to do something so that they could capture her values and hold on to her legacy."
It is a fact that remembering someone past their death is a difficult task. Other than the help of photos and the stories exchanged among close ones a person does inevitably becomes a distant memory to the general public. It’s why Jivi has dedicated a big portion of her life offering this service. “It started with me thinking about actors and dancers who are fortunate enough to leave a legacy behind through their body of work for the world to see. Which then led to me thinking about what kind of legacy I would leave? How could I pass on the lessons and experiences I’ve learned for future generations to see? How do you create your own immortality?”
A “value legacy” created by Jivi traditionally requires 5 to 10 sessions. It can be more visual using photos to create wall tree collages or video cameras or it can be more of a traditional footprint of one’s life. It starts with going back as far as you can remember historically and going from there. “Creating a value legacy is such a personal thing and completely tailor made to each individual,”
When asked about what Jivi’s greatest lesson learned from these value legacy sessions, “Typically after 2 to 3 sessions people start to see patterns in their life about the values they hold dear to their heart, they start to emerge out of the conversations we are having,” says Jivi. “Self Awareness is the strongest element that I have personally learned. People are very self aware and yet sometimes do not want to surface emotion thinking it would be hurtful or are simply afraid about what they might discover. My role is to make this journey as easy and smooth as it can be while creating an environment of trust, empathy and no judgment. Ah’ha moments come throughout out the sessions, sometimes within the first few and sometimes at the last session. The look on my client’s face at that time is priceless and validates my passion for why I continue to offer this service.”
Today, after creating almost 80 values legacies Jivi shares that the underlining theme of it all is that people learn many lessons in life. When given the opportunity and the right environment they remember more than they think they would about their own history. Jivi also notices a trend that people carry a fair bit of guilt, blame and denial as emotional baggage. Sometimes just talking through those lessons, learned from that piece of history, people are more open to moving on from those memories. “The myth may be that a Value Legacy is only for people that are terminally ill and yet the opposite is true as well," says Jivi. “What better time to remember your life lessons and values that you have acquired then right now. It’s for anyone that wants to discover the moments that have impacted them and a chance for them to leave a piece of themselves behind for the world to remember.”
