People diagnosed with early stage lung cancer can double their chances of survival over five years if they stop smoking compared with those who continue to smoke, a report out today has said.
The findings of the report published on bmj.com today, which looked at the effects of continued smoking after diagnosis of the disease, add weight to the argument that it may be worthwhile to offer smoking cessation treatment to patients with early stage lung cancer.
According to Cancer Research, lung cancer kills more people than any other type of cancer and around 80% of these deaths are caused by smoking.
Around 800 people die from lung cancer in Northern Ireland each year.
The charity said the findings of the report substantiate calls for lung cancer patients to receive support to help them kick the habit.
