By: Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center The theme of this year’s Health Fair will focus on safety issues, including home safety, automobile and driving safety, health safety, food safety, Identity theft, etc. Speakers and exhibitors will provide information to raise awareness and knowledge among older adults to reduce their chances of being victims and sustain a high quality of life for our seniors. The program will premier a claymation movie created by senior members of the MAR-JCC entitled “Safety is Sexy.” A group of senior members from the MAR-JCC senior programming participated in this exciting project - from writing the script, to creating their own clay characters, to coloring the backgrounds, and recording their voices, creating a piece on important safety senior related issues. The program will also include presentation by Ernie Long of the Aventura Police, on Identity theft and Self Defense. Ernest Long is the Crime Prevention Coordinator for the City of Aventura. Ernie was first certified in Crime Prevention in 1983 while employed as a police officer in New Jersey. Ernie has taught crime prevention related courses all over the state to both private and public organizations including the Governors Hurricane Conference, Florida Human Resources Association and the State of Florida Environmental Protection Department. The National Crime Prevention Association and the Florida State Attorney General recognized Ernie at the 2006 Crime Prevention Associations Annual Awards Ceremony for his commitment to Crime Prevention. Also during the day, Wendy Stephan from Poison Information Center will speak about Prescription Safety. Free health screenings will also be provided throughout the day, including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body fat, hearing, and others.
