One of the greatest joys in a writer's life is hearing the news that a major publisher likes their work and is offering them a professional publishing contract. Yet, one of the greatest disappointments in a writer's career is learning that after several months or a year after their book has been released it is no longer available and is "Out of Print."
"It's a harsh reality of the publishing industry," said Robert Gelinas, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of ArcheBooks Publishing. "With the major publishing houses, it's bestseller or nothing these days. That makes it almost impossible for new voices to be heard, and even some well-known ones are being stifled. "Getting traditionally published is something less than 1% of those who try ever achieve," said Mr. Gelinas. "That's a major accomplishment no one can ever take away from an author. However, what they CAN take away is physically having an author's work available for people to purchase and enjoy, both now and in the future. Yet, advances in digital manufacturing and content management technology has empowered us to effectively remedy that. The practice of giving new titles from new authors only a short time to prove themselves lets far too much talent fall through the cracks. Perhaps some books will never be million-copy bestsellers, but that doesn't mean they need to die a quick death. We have the ability to resurrect them and bring them back to life. Then again, who knows, perhaps some of them could be million-copy bestsellers, given a second chance."
