Easton, MD – Katana Forensics LLC, a new mobile forensic solutions provider, is now providing software and training to law enforcement and private high-tech crimes investigators.
Katana Forensics differentiates itself in several regards:
It takes a “one device, one tool” niche approach to mobile forensics. “Rather than support 90% of mobile devices on the market, Katana's software supports just one at a time,” said Sean Morrissey, managing director. “This focus means it can recover more data than conventional mobile forensic tools, and allow examiners to analyze that data as well.”
Katana Forensics training is vendor-neutral. Its software is taught, but is not the focus of training. “Our training instead provides investigators with a full toolbox of software,” said Michael Harrington, the company's director of training. “We teach them how to apply a variety of tools to proper forensic methodology.”
Katana Forensics also designs its tools to be easy to validate, meaning examiners will be able to prove it does what it says it does in court.
Finally, Katana Forensics works in cooperation with mobile device vendors such as Apple. “We work with them so that we can develop better forensic tools without jeopardizing their competitive advantage,” said Morrissey.
New iPhone forensic software Lantern will launch at the DoD CyberCrime conference in St. Louis, Missouri this week. Priced at just $399, the software is meant for investigators who cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars for a forensic tool. A free trial version with limited features is also available.
ABOUT KATANA FORENSICS:
Katana Forensics, LLC was founded in 2010 to address the growing need for “niche” tools in the mobile forensics market. Its “one device, one tool” philosophy means lower costs, better and more accurate data, and solutions that do not violate device manufacturers' intellectual property rights. The Maryland-based company offers training solutions in addition to software. Visit its website at http://www.katanaforensics.com.
ABOUT LANTERN:
Lantern enables forensic investigators to perform logical acquisitions from the Apple iPhone. Its focus on one tool allows the low-cost Lantern to extract more data than other commonly used mobile forensic tools. Additionally, it allows for granular extraction and analysis of mobile evidence, so examiners can pick and choose which data they want to recover as they build cases. In addition, Lantern's focus on a single device allows examiners to validate the tool more easily than they can with other tools.
