Science, God, the Bible and Jehovah’s Witnesses

Some find a discrepancy between God and science, others believe the Bible to be incongruous with science. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that God, the Bible and Science are congruous and support each other.

Fundamentalists have taught that the earth was created in six days. However, the Bible simply states in its opening verse in Genesis, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This allows for the present estimation of the age of the universe as determined by scientists, of about 20 billion years.

Similarly, the earth is thought to have been created approximately 4.6 billion years ago. The Bible has no issue with those dates, although it does not specifically comment on how long ago the universe or earth was created. In contrast to these dates for the age of the universe, the Bible says of God that he is from “time indefinite to time indefinite,” that is, He is without beginning or end. This is a question that many children and teens ask, and that all may have asked at one time or another.

Additionally, one can ask, what are the six creative days of Genesis? The six creative days in Genesis refer to days of creation with respect to the earth. They are not referring to the creation of the earth, but rather, geological and biological developments on the earth, after the earth’s creation. Additionally, the “days” of Genesis, can be translated “epochs,” and the Bible sometimes speaks of  “days” differently than as referring to a 24 hour period.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe the creative days to be creative “epochs” or time-periods, that can be hundreds of thousands or even millions of years each. The term “days” was used through God’s perspective rather than man’s, and the Bible indicates that God’s manner of keeping time, is understandably different than man’s. See 2 Peter Chapter 3 verses 6-9. The Genesis account also allows for scientific interpretation in terms of evolution, and a certain amount of Darwinian interpretation, that is to say, it relates an account that has an affinity with “micro-evolution” rather than  “macroevolution.”
