Sleep Apnea in Obese Teens Worsens with Age

Research indicates that sleep apnea among obese adolescents worsens as the teens age. One possible explanation is older children having bigger tonsils, making them more prone to the condition.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 22, 2010 - Do you or your child have a history of snoring or obesity? Learn the symptoms of sleep apnea at http://www.ihatecpap.com . Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is a disorder in which the tissues at the back of the throat temporarily collapse during sleep, causing repeated stops and starts in breathing during the night. This leads to poor-quality sleep and, often, daytime drowsiness.

It is essential that the pediatric and dental communities recognize that children do not grow and eliminate the problems of enlarged tonsils and adenoids but rather they experience distorted growth that must be corrected. Early diagnosis and treatment of airway is essential for proper dento-facial growth.

If you or your child have sleep apnea or disruptive snoring and do not tolerate CPAP, I HATE CPAP wants to help you find answers go to http://www.IHateCPAP.com.  This online sleep medicine resource promotes sleep medicine and emotionally connects with patients who have abandoned CPAP treatment due to negative experiences or prefer to explore an alternative to cpap.

Regardless of the child’s age, he/she should be brought to a qualified physician whenever he/she displays sleep apnea symptoms. Dental Sleep Meicine and Neuromuscular Dentistry are key in improving the quality of live of these patients as adults. Early intervention may greatly reduce the number of patients who develop these problems.

To discuss a dental alternative to CPAP with an experienced sleep apnea dentist in your area, visit the “Find a Doctor” section at http://www.ihatecpap.com/directory_listings/main_director...
