FinSoul: Binding global emission cuts essential says German Chancellor.

Angela Merkel appeals to industrialized nations to agree to binding greenhouse gas cuts to fight climate change.

Jan. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- FinSoul understands that German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, who has consistently lead the way in prompting other nations in the fight against climate change has come out and also  squarely laid the blame  on emerging nations for their part in failing to agree on a more ambitious treaty at the Copenhagen Summit last year.

The new Copenhagen Accord saw countries agree to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial times, the limit scientist have suggested is the maximum if we are to avoid the worst effects of global warming, but failed however to say how this was to be achieved.

"I think we agree the results we reached in Copenhagen were disappointing," FinSoul believes the Chancellor was quoted as saying, adding that Europe would continue to play a leading role in carbon emission cutting.

"We need global cooperation and progress will only be possible with internationally binding commitments -- but for everyone. This is what we must work on and this is the task ahead." Merkel continued.

The UN’s next climate change meeting is scheduled to take place in Bonn, Germany from 31 May to 11 June.

FinSoul understands that Angela Merkel emphasized that in her opinion Copenhagen’s biggest disappointment had been when emerging nations refused to agree to targets for cutting emissions linked to an international framework.

She vowed to continue to push other countries on this issue, and highlighted Germany’s target of a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 saying she hoped that other nations would follow suit.
