19 January 2010, Freetown, Splash Mobile Money announced today that COMIUM, one of Sierra Leone’s leading mobile and broadband telecommunications providers, has joined with Splash Mobile Money Limited to provide access to SPLASH, Sierra Leone’s pioneering Mobile Money Service.” Mobile Financial Services are a key enabler of economic growth in emerging markets”, said Mike Carroll, General Manager of Comium in Sierra Leone. He added, “We are delighted to offer this new and ‘home grown’ service to our clients”.
Splash Mobile Money launched its pilot operation in Sierra Leone on September 16th 2009 and in less that four months has seen over 13,000 clients enrol to the service.
“We are truly humbled and excited by the response of our clients to this new service. We are at a early stage of our growth, but encouraged by it’s reception, we are building on this early success to empower tens of thousands of Sierra Leoneans who would otherwise not have access to basic banking services.“ said Mr. Sheka Forna, Director of Splash.
Splash is Sierra Leone’s first mobile payment system, allowing you to send money to other mobile users using just your phone.
To send money you must register with a Splash agent and load money into your Splash account. You can then send that money to another mobile phone user, using just text messages.
“We are grateful for the government of Sierra Leone and NATCOM for creating an environment where entrepreneurship can grow and where competitors in the telecommunication arena can work together to create value for themselves and at the same time empower the people of Sierra Leone to build a better future” said Mr. Forna
