Atkins Thomson represented Ed Buxton in his claim against Associated Newspapers in respect of a seriously defamatory article entitled "Sophie Anderton reveals black eye after ex-lover's arrest". Following a letter before action from Mark Thomson of Atkins Thomson the Daily Mail have agreed to pay damages and costs and have today published the following online apology.
"We published an article, on 18 July 2009, suggesting that Sophie Anderton had been seen with a nasty black eye just three days after the police had been called to break up a fight between her and her ex-boyfriend, Ed Buxton. In fact, the police were not called to break up a fight between them and Ed Buxton had nothing to do with Sophie Anderton’s black eye. Although Ed Buxton was arrested on suspicion of assault, he was not subsequently charged and was cleared by the police. We apologise for any embarrassment caused."
