Jan. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- A GROUP of top American academics was given a treat at Swansea's Dylan Thomas Centre during a visit to the UK.

All 40 Fulbright scholars currently studying in Britain visited the attraction to listen to an overview of the famous poet's life and works.

The overview was given by Jo Furber, Swansea Council Dylan Thomas Projects Officer. Swansea actor and writer Peter Read also performed extracts of his one-man show, Dylan Thomas in America.

The Fulbright Commission offers awards for people to study, research, teach, lecture or professionally develop in any academic field.

Some of the more famous former Fulbright scholars include Ian Rankin, Sylvia Plath and Boutros Boutros Ghali.

The US/UK Fulbright Commission hosts an annual cultural emersion programme every January for all American Fulbright academics studying, lecturing or researching in the UK. The trip to the Dylan Thomas Centre formed part of the programme.

Their visit to Swansea was organised by Swansea University’s International Office and was the second time in six months the academics were entertained at the centre.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: "The Dylan Thomas Centre is one of the finest cultural attractions in the country and its popularity is testament to the poet's enduring appeal.

"The facility was opened by no less than former US President Jimmy Carter and continues to attract some of the foremost academics and performers on the planet.

"It's a real feather in Swansea's cap that we have such an esteemed centre right here on our doorstep."

The Dylan Thomas Centre’s experienced literature and curatorial team offer a variety of talks and lectures to suit all requirements both at the centre and in the community.
