CAPAPA hosts Data Privacy Day events across Canada

CAPAPA (Canadian Association of Professional Privacy and Access Administrators) hosts events Across Canada in celebration of the 4th Annual Data Privacy Day to help increase Canadians’ awareness of their privacy and access rights & responsibilities

Calgary, Alberta – CAPAPA (Canadian Association of Professional Access and Privacy Administrators), Canada’s leading association of privacy and access professionals, is leading the nation-wide Data Privacy Day campaign to highlight the importance of protecting personal information.

“Data Privacy Day is important to raise awareness and generate discussion about data privacy and access rights and responsibilities,” said Sharon Polsky, National Chair of CAPAPA. “Through Connexions networking and educational events across Canada, CAPAPA is engaging a broad audience of Canadians to help them understand practical aspects of safeguarding personal information.”

Data Protection Day is an internationally recognized day to highlight the importance of protecting personal information. CAPAPA events celebrating this 4th International Data Privacy Day are being held in major centers across Canada from January 25 to January 28, with the generous support and participation of Federal and Provincial Privacy Commissioners, government agencies, and private sector organizations:

Victoria, BC (January 28) — CAPAPA is sponsoring a noon-hour event at Royal Roads University to raise awareness of privacy issues and concerns that arise for staff and faculty members on a regular basis.

Vancouver, BC (January 28) — CAPAPA’s midday event is cohosted by the Law Society of British Columbia and features guest speakers from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia discussing Privacy and FOI for Governing Bodies of Professions or Occupations.

Edmonton, AB (January 28) — CAPAPA’s midday event cohosted by ATB Financial and Nirix Technologies features speakers from the Office of the Public Guardian discussing Alberta’s Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act and its impact on other relevant legislation.

Toronto, ON (January 28) — CAPAPA presents a half-day conference with presentations about data privacy and recent developments in Canadian privacy legislation. Guest speakers from Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General (Ontario), Hicks Morley, and Informatica Corporation.

Ottawa, ON (January 28) — In association with the Credit Institute of Canada, CAPAPA presents a half-day conference with presentations discussing data loss prevention and recent developments in Privacy and Freedom of Information that relate to the financial services industry in Canada. Featured speakers from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and CA Canada.

Halifax, NS (January 28) — A half-day conference at Dalhousie University with keynote speakers, advanced workshops focusing on topics for privacy professionals, and educational workshops looking at day-to-day privacy solutions. Featured speakers include Nova Scotia’s former provincial coordinator for the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, McInnes Cooper, faculty and staff from Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University.

St. John’s (January 27&28), Happy Valley-Goose Bay (January 25), Stephenville (January 26), and Corner Brook (January 26 & 27), NL — Workshops, public information forums, and networking events presented by CAPAPA in collaboration with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Memorial University, Canadian Bar Association, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Grenfell College, and College of the North Atlantic.
