Personal Emergency Response Companies Take Flight in 2010, as 911 Systems Fail

With Headlines throughout the US telling the same troubling story - "Budget Cuts Reduce 911 Response Time," or "Human Error Leads to 19 Hour 911 Delay" - health care experts agree: 911 systems are in a state of emergency.

Jan. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- Stamford, CT,  -- As lawmakers consider a fundamental overhaul of 911 systems, private citizens are taking charge. They're hiring personal emergency response companies to do the job they feel the public 911 system can not provide faster, more informed emergency response for their loved ones. "After reading about all the problems with 911, I looked for a more reliable emergency care solution when my 90 year old father became ill,” said Stamford, CT resident Ann Cataldo. "I wanted to hire an emergency care service that would treat my father as if he’s part of their family.”

Cataldo found Medics SOS and has been very happy with their service, especially during an incident in which her father, Pete Gentile, fell to the floor inside his Stamford apartment and, because of his injuries, could not sit up or even crawl to his house phone to call 911. However, with the simple push of a button on his medical alert write band, a Medics SOS dispatcher was alerted, a local ambulance arrived within minutes along with Gentiles medical profile. And during the two minutes it took the ambulance to arrive, Gentile received reassurances from the Medics SOS dispatcher, who spoke with him through a loudspeaker activated by his wrist band. The Medics SOS dispatcher kept Gentile calm until emergency personnel arrived on the scene less than 3 minutes later. "If you have an elderly loved one or someone who is bed-ridden and can’t get to a regular phone to dial 911, the MedicsSOS emergency button gives me and my family peace of mind that my father will be cared for if he has another health related emergency.” Cataldo said.

Cataldo is one of a growing number of residents throughout the country who believe private medical alert systems are more reliable than traditional 911 emergency care. They no longer trust 911 to care for their loved ones in an emergency. MedicsSOS, the company Harris hired, is a subscription-based emergency response company, based in Connecticut that puts clients in immediate contact, at the push of a button, with a highly trained emergency medical technician. Armed with a patient's personal medical profile, MedicsSOS can provide treatment advice until the ambulance arrives. "Two years ago, when we started the company, my father and I saw emergency response times getting longer and longer," said Chris Kemp, co-founder of Medics SOS, along with his father Bill Kemp. Having previously founded Kemp Controls, an alarm responder company, the Kemps launch of their new company, MedicsSOS, is coming at the right time for many Americans who no longer trust the traditional 911 system.
