Dallas, TX: Frausun, the experimental/
After acquiring an antique medical skeleton, Kurtz, the sole performer of Frausun, transformed the bones into a stringed instrument and flute to bring a sound that he could not find anywhere else. Included with the bones, he uses Indian flutes, Tibetan singing bowls, hand bells, and digital effects.
“The body is the ultimate instrument. It has strings, drums, rhythm...everything needed to create the harmony of music.”
Inspired by such musical influences as Dead Can Dance, Death in June, and Peter Murphy, and a variety of literary sources such as Kate Chopin, Keats, and William S. Burroughs, Frausun represents the masculine expression of feminine energy, hence the name Frau (Woman) Sun (Male Strength).
“I wear a golden veil as a symbol for the sun. The dots and dashes scattered among the imagery and sounds are Morse Code, revealing secret phrases, enhanced by Magick. In my song “Anthem for Raganorak,” the opening beat is spelled out as O-D-I-N in Morse Code, using bass, invoking his name before he battles to the death.”
Frausun’s songs cover a variety of subjects from Tibetan Sky Burials and Goddess worship, to female empowerment and Alchemical love. Kurtz was motivated to begin his project after reading a story about a woman killed in Afghanistan for being too “westernized.”
“If just 1% of the women who heard the song “Thunder in your Veins,” about a wife who kills her husband after she is forced to wear a burka and is beaten, and their reaction was to unite, putting knives to the throats of their abusers, then I know my work has succeeded."
