Harnessing History Skills At Archive Workshops

Jan. 18, 2010 - PRLog -- A SERIES of expert workshops have been lined up to help people harness their history hunting skills.

The West Glamorgan Archive Service at the Civic Centre is running five workshops from next month aimed at both beginners and people who already use the facilities.

The talks will offer a practical guide to some of the techniques needed to delve into the past and uncover our area's local history.

Each workshop costs £5. They'll be held on a Monday morning and will last from 10am to noon.

The following areas of study will be looked at on the following days:

• February 15: An introduction to archives. This shows how to use the Archive Service and how to begin your research.
• March 1: How to look after your own archives.
• March 15: How to interpret old maps.
• March 29: How to interpret old photographs.
• April 12: How to read old handwriting.

The first hour of the session will focus on theory and the second will focus on practical skills.

People are being asked to book their place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: "Researching areas such as your family tree or local area can be a hugely rewarding hobby. Thousands of people make the most of our expert Archive Service every year and these courses will be enormously helpful to both beginners and people who have already started their studies.
