Jan. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- Dawn Abrams, RN, BSN deals with all types of health issues at school on a daily basis.  These situations can involve ailments such as the flu, chicken pox, strep throat, lice and colds to name a few.  In addition to illnesses, she encounters potentially life threatening risks such as food allergies, bee sting allergies, asthma and diabetes.  “It’s amazing to me that on a particular day I can deal with a full spectrum of conditions ranging from a sniffle to a potentially severe allergic reaction.”

Dawn says that the role of a School Nurse is more important than ever.  “With the sharp increase in conditions such as life-threatening food allergies, schools need to develop policies and procedures to deal with a potentially serious incident.  It is more important than ever for parents to communicate with both their child’s physician and the school nurse.”

Communication is the key in today’s school environment, says Dawn.  “Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of all students.”  Dawn has been instrumental in establishing food allergy action plans at her school.  She feels that all schools should recognize the potential seriousness of the conditions and take action to minimize any potential threats.

Dawn has setup a site designed for parents of elementary aged school children.  “The purpose of my blog is to offer parents a place to go and find information about hot health topics encountered at school.  I encourage discussions about any school related health issues.”  Additionally, Dawn provides links to many valuable websites where parents can go to find relevant information.
