FinSoul: Copenhagen Accord faces a tough next few weeks says U.S. climate envoy.

The next couple of weeks could determine the accords ability to slow climate change.

Jan. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- FinSoul believes that in his first public remarks since the Copenhagen summit, Todd Stern, the U.S. state department climate change envoy said that the next few weeks would be critical in deciding the success of the Copenhagen Accord.

"We have an accord that is lumbering down the runway, and we need it to get enough speed so it can take off. We need to get this up and running," he told an investor meeting at the UN.

Stern, FinSoul understands, highlighted that the next year would be vital in ironing out the details of the accord, which because of the mistrust and finger pointing surrounding the talks, only consisted of twelve paragraphs.

The end of January will see the accord face its first test as industrialized nations and leading developing countries present their commitments to greenhouse gas emissions cuts.

The U.S. envoy said that his country’s administration would be working with other nations to flesh out the institutional requirements that would turn the aims of the accord into reality, including the establishment of a $100 billion a year climate fund to assist developing nations in dealing with climate change, a protection plan for the globes forests and the accurate monitoring of countries’ action plans.

FinSoul believes however that Stern said the Obama administration would not yield full ownership of the negotiation process to the United Nations.
