How many monitoring centers does the company have? A great security company will have multiple monitoring centers networked together for redundancy. If something happens that may disable one center are there back ups. Also, more monitoring centers means more responders. See how many people monitor accounts. If a company has 100,000 active accounts and 10 people responding to signals, what happens when you get 20 signals at the same time? You want a reliable company that has the capacity to act very quickly to alarm signals so you will not lose critical time during an emergency, especially fire.
Almost any company that offers a low upfront cost on a standard security system has a contract. What’s the initial term of the contract? Does it renew automatically yearly (or more) or monthly? A good security monitoring company will have an initial term (usually 36 months) and only renew in 30 day terms (month to month). This means a company feels it is doing an exceptional job and does not need to lock a customer back into yearly contracts. Some companies renew in yearly terms and only allow the customer to cancel service in a small window of 30-60 days before the end of the initial term. Isn’t it easier to negotiate when you are not stuck in the middle of a contract? If you are struggling financially and want to try and lower a rate it can be done a lot easier if you have the leverage of being able to cancel anytime.
What are the moving policies? It may be better to sign with a national company that can accommodate you if you are to move out of the region within or after the contract. Smaller, local companies may not service outside of a small region or state. If they cannot offer service to where you are moving they will probably charge you 100% of the remainder of the contract.
