Jan. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES AND PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA— Nationwide Fire Protection Corp. has released its list of five worst fire hazards, along with tips for preventing them.

“We encounter a great many potentially dangerous hazards in restaurants and commercial kitchens on an almost daily basis,” said Massoud Farazandeh, general manager of Nationwide Fire Protection Corp., a Denver and Los Angeles fire protection (http://www.nationwidefireprotection.com/) company.

The Los Angeles fire alarm systems company released its list of the top five hazards its employees encounter, in hope that it will educate restaurant owners and managers about these potentially dangerous situations and how to prevent them, protect their employees from injury and prevent expensive property damage, Farazandeh said.

The top five worst fire hazards are as follows:

1. Kitchen hood, duct and fan systems that have grease build-up due to failure to have them cleaned routinely.

This is a potentially dangerous problem on many levels, Farazandeh said. Failure to have these systems cleaned routinely can adversely effect proper airflow levels and it increases the opportunity for extensive damage in the event of a fire.

If a fire was to break out in a kitchen that had failed to maintain a routine cleaning schedule, it is possible that grease build-up in these systems could provide additional fuel for the fire. Fires that spread through ductwork can easily reach the roof and cause devastating damage.

2. Poor housekeeping.

Dirt and clutter can become fuel in the event of a fire, so it’s important to keep walkways and areas around cooking processes clean and clutter-free.

3. Grease traps that are not emptied regularly.

Grease traps collect food pieces and even the occasional, random paper products. When left to accumulate, adding hot grease to a grease trap can ignite these potentially flammable items. It is best to empty grease traps before they are brimming with grease and debris to avoid potential danger.

4. Improperly storing flammable materials.
Restaurant kitchens can be busy places, but it is important not to take shortcuts that can cause fire or injury. Flammable materials need to be kept in areas that are apart from heat sources or open flames. This includes aerosol cans, cleaning rags and aprons.

5. Faulty electrical equipment and/or frayed electrical cords.

Faulty equipment and frayed electrical cords have the potential to cause electrical fires or to electrocute people. Get these items repaired or replaced to avoid potential danger.
