I have been lifted up, but first shaken up. The ground quaked under my feet and now here I lie under piles of rubble gasping for air. I see the heavens open up to receive me. I hear the rushing sound of angel’s wings flapping in the air. I can feel the flow of warm air breezing through my ears as they swept my body close to theirs that now caresses me. I am gone but my family and friends remain to be saved by the humanity of man. Please take the hand of Haiti, hear the cries of despair, reach out to touch a stranger who cannot feel the touch of your human hand but can feel the strong pulse of your kindness. I now look down and float amongst the clouds and I can see the love that is going to change my country forever.

The ground trembled under my feet and at the time I did not know why my country was shaken, but now revealed it was for the world to awaken that we are here, awaiting rebirth. I hear the resounding voices echoing from Haitians that were tossed into graves with bodies of unknown souls. Stacked upon each other flesh to flesh and bone to bone but comforted knowing all were surrounded by kindred spirits. Their souls cry out in the blood that now runs down their veins ever so slowly until life evaporates. I see the tears of mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers, but mostly I see the cries of a people who must overcome fear through their tears.

I have been lifted up, but first shaken up. No structure can withstand the force of nature when it is time to reorganize the landscape. The rubble will be removed, the buildings will be rebuilt, and I pray your eyes now see we are all but an earthquake away from disaster if we do not embrace each other as part of mankind. I am riding on the angel’s wings, asking “Where were you when I needed food, water, and medicine to get well? Why did some of you wait until I could no longer speak? I realize now the ground had to shake, the earth had to roar, and the heart had to build a new chamber to beat to a new rhythm of love.

I am a Haitian by birth, it runs through my veins. Now it must run through yours. So, as I sit on the angel’s wings and breeze amongst you, hear my cries, rebuild my land and we will forever be as one. The miracles of life that sustained the roar of the earth are evidence we must live on and there is work to do. Dear Haiti I love you, for you have paved the way for never ending blessings to be bestowed upon your country and the world. Hear the flutter of my wings, the breeze that cools you in the heat of the day. Do not mourn me my life was never my own.
