Early last year a design contest was announced to readers of Laurel's Originals monthly Design Newsletter to submit a design idea for a painted canvas rug, (also known as floor cloths). The winner would be awarded a hand painted canvas rug of their submitted design.
With over twenty-five designs submitted, the judges' final decisions were torn between two different designs, both reflecting a beach theme décor.
Grand Prize winner, Lundy Wilder of Villa Lagoon Tile in Gulf Shores, Alabama, is a talented tile designer and manufacturer. Her submission incorporated light pastel colors with various depictions of sea life, representing her 'Pescado" line of encaustic cement tiles.
Ms. Anderson, owner of Laurel's Originals notes, "as an artist, it was the beauty and flow of Lundy's sea life related details that immediately captured my attention."
Because of the detail and the fact that Lundy's design originated from tiles, it was determined to make and paint a larger rug of canvas for this grand prize winner, to fully appreciate the tile aspect. Additionally, stencils were created to maximize the exactness and recreate a tile effect onto the canvas rug. The rug is currently in production and will be sent to its owner soon.
Nicole Yee, second place winner of the design contest submitted a simple design depicting a beige seahorse against a black background.
"Nicole's design is beautiful in its simplicity and striking in its contrast; black and white, or in this case beige, always makes a profound and rich decorating statement," remarked Laurel Anderson, owner of Laurel's Originals.
Ms. Yee of NY Interiors, a bi-coastal residential interior designer, had been contacted to announce her win. Unfortunately, the winner was headed for a west coast location and has yet to see her winning design as a painted canvas rug.
The success of this first design contest for canvas rug designs has inspired Ms. Anderson to make this an annual event. Notices for a 2nd Annual Canvas Rug Design Contest will be announced in Laurel's Design Newsletter: http://www.laurelsoriginals.com
