New Book Explores Rockefeller’s Influence on Cleveland Through Postcards

Local author completes pictorial history.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan 15, 2010 -
The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Postcard History series is Rockefeller’s Cleveland from local author Sharon E. Gregor. The book boasts more than 200 vintage postcards that offer a fascinating look and visual tour of the city of Cleveland that John D. Rockefeller knew from the 1850s to 1917.

Rockefeller arrived in Cleveland in 1853 a boy of 14 and spent six decades in his adopted hometown. With the Standard Oil Company's incorporation in 1870, Rockefeller became the city's most well-known industrialist and, from 1885 to 1917, its foremost summer resident at his Forest Hill estate. Here he raised his children, laid the foundation of a financial and industrial empire, and established a commitment to charitable giving.

At the end of the Civil War, Cleveland was a crucible from which would be cast the fortunes of many. None were greater than Rockefeller's. Rockefeller's Cleveland captures the visual panorama of a dynamic city that literally reinvented itself in the 1800s, and in doing so emerged a major business and industrial center.

Highlights of Rockefeller’s Cleveland:
•   The postcard images came from the private collections of the author.
•   The book identifies many Cleveland landmarks that are associated with Rockefeller, not just the familiar ones like Rockefeller Park and the Rockefeller Building.
•   The book recognizes many of Rockefeller’s philanthropic contributions, and also the social contributions of three generations of the women of the Rockefeller family.
