In a review released today, Televisions.com gives its appraisal of JVC’s XV-BP 1 Blu-ray player. The review combines measurements from the team’s laboratory with subjective picture-quality evaluation, giving the player an overall score of 8.0 out of 10 points. The reviewer awarded plus-points, for example, for the player’s economical power consumption and excellent picture quality with HD content. Televisions.com also praises the XV-BP 1’s bit stream audio output. But criticism goes to the player’s weak DVD de-interlacing, as well as to the poor selection of picture controls and multimedia features. The review stresses that the player’s picture quality is excellent - Televisions.com’s editor-in-chief, Florian Friedrich, said: “Simple operation adds to the list of positives, as does the excellent overall picture quality. But some small errors did creep in, and we would have liked to see more multimedia extras.”

Both the on-screen menu and the remote control draw compliments from the reviewer, who also applauds the player’s speedy disc-loading times. Slight criticism appears for the picture quality, with the reviewer noticing clipping on blacker-than-black and whiter-than-white content, as well as flicker in tricky test sequences. Televisions.com also observed slight flicker in DVD video, but praises the player’s up-scaling of standard-definition content. The review remains positive as it turns its attention to the XV-BP 1’s sound; here, the reviewer was impressed by the quality of its CD playback. Still, Televisions.com recommends using the bit stream output for HD audio and leaving the decoding to an AV receiver.

The review includes diagrams of the JVC’s audio and video frequency responses, which it also classifies as near-perfect. One reviewer said: “This JVC outputs excellent video and audio signals, but lets the user down in terms of extra features. If all you want your player to do is play back discs, you’ll be in good hands with the XV-BP 1, but multimedia fans should look elsewhere.”
