The automotive training program at Oklahoma Technical College received word this December that it has successfully obtained certification by NATEF and The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in all eight available areas of automotive inspection: engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, breaks, electrical flash electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance.
To achieve this coveted recognition, the school’s automotive training program underwent rigorous on-site evaluation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). The advanced training offered by Oklahoma Technical College’s newly certified program will allow students to take the ASE certification exam immediately after graduation, without the requisite two years of on-the-job experience. Their education will also lesson the number of on-the-job hours required to achieve ASE certification.
“This is great news for automotive-minded young people and their parents,” said Donald Seyfer, NATEF Chair. “Because this program increases cooperation between local education and industry leaders, it gives added assurance that Oklahoma Technical College’s graduates will be employable entry-level technicians. As a result of the quality education provided by Oklahoma Technical College, the motoring public will benefit since better repair technicians will join the work force.”
Melvin White, automotive department head, added, “During the past few months, we have worked closely with NATEF to make certain that our program would meet strict industry standards. The fact that we qualified for certification in all eight areas speaks to the quality of education students receive, as well as the contribution those students will make to shop owners when they graduate.”
