The Sottish government is reassuring the residents as well as the tourists on the supplies of road salt for proper road maintenance while the weather conditions worsens.

The statistics state 30,000 tonnes of salt were used in last two weeks. In the borders salting is limited to A roads and the authorities urged the drivers not to travel 'unless absolutely essential'. Fife, South Lanarkshire and Aberdeen are reported to have sufficient stocks compared to other councils in Scotland.

An Edinburgh council spokeswoman said: "We have enough to keep going for the next few days, with a delivery expected. We are prioritising bus lanes, hospitals and main roads. But by the time we have done Category One roads, a new flurry of snow falls and you have to do them again."

The residents or tourists who travel on the roads are asked to take precautionary measures and keep their vehicles intact for the weather conditions. Some of the tips provided for a safe journey are :

To slower speeds as it can take up to 10 times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road.

To  keep a longer gap than normal between you and the vehicle in front. Much longer when there is ice or snow on the road, brake and accelerate more gently on wet.

In snowy or icy surfaces, use dipped headlights in mist.

Fog, falling snow or heavy rain, use rear fog lights in fog, mist or falling snow but not in rain and turn them off as soon as conditions allow.

When you need to brake, get into a low gear earlier than normal and allow your speed to fall. Use the brake pedal gently.

As the winter sun can dazzle your eyes keep a pair of sunglasses handy.

Even when the weather conditions are unfavorable, the reports suggests travelers are flowing into the country to spend their vacation in the highlands were there is plenty of winter activities. The online service providers like Travel Scotland Holidays(www.scotland.org.uk) are viewing high traffic into Scotland and the government is reassuring proper road maintenance of  the roads for a smooth travel in Scotland.
