Sky News reports that the Hong Kong police have detained a man following an acid attack that left thirty people injured in one of Hong Kong’s popular tourist spots, the Temple Street Market, in Mong Kok, the most densely populated place on the planet.
Local shop owners, residents and emergency crews rushed to pour water over the victims, in an attempt to neutralize the burning acid, after two bottles of foul-smelling liquid were flung from a roof overlooking the night market.
The injured suffered burns to their faces, arms and legs. They included nine tourists and a seven-year old child.
One Malaysian tourist said “People were running for shelter and some were screaming. It was chaotic.”
The exits of buildings were blocked by local residents, as they waited for the police to begin their search for the perpetrator. A Chinese man, in his 30’s, was discovered hiding on an upper floor in a building next to Temple Street. According to a police spokesman, the man had two lids that fitted the bottles used in the attack.
This was the sixth such incident across the city that left both residents and visitors wary. As hundreds celebrated Hong Kong’s football team win over Japan last month, acid was thrown into a crowd in Causeway Bay.
The police think the arrested man could be behind the reign of terror, which has injured 100 people over the past 13 months.
The authorities had come under attack as they failed to find the perpetrator of the attacks, despite installing surveillance cameras, increased foot patrols and offering a reward for information.
The attacks have been described as ‘outrageous and heart-breaking by Donald Tsang, Hong Kong’s leader.
The Telegraph Co UK reported that so far there has been no motive for the attacks. Psychologists however believe that it is a lone individual daring the police to catch him.
Local residents and tourists alike will groan with relief if the man held in custody is truly the perpetrator of these cowardly attacks.
