With only about two weeks remaining until the special election for Missouri State Representative for the 27th district, Jason Gregory is winning the Facebook race by 67% of the online vote. Will Facebook forecast the actual election result? It's hard to tell, but it's interesting how social media is forever changing political campaigning. Facebook, the leading social media site, allows political candidates to create a webpage where Facebook users can become a supporter with the click of a button. The candidates then use this webpage on Facebook to interact with their supporters by answering questions and posting videos, events and campaign status updates.
When asked about his lead in the Facebook race, Mr. Gregory said, "I am just honored to gain so much support so fast. I'm not a career politician and conventional wisdom says that the one with the most name recognition has the advantage, but Facebook isn't conventional;
Is Facebook a telling "crystal ball" for this special election? We will find out on February 2, 2010 when Mr. Gregory and his opponent, face off in the real voting booth. Until then, Facebook is the place to watch the race as it develops.
