GOLDEN, CO—On January 5, 2010, Foothills Art Center began renovating the walls of its signature main gallery, the Quaintance Gallery, thanks to generous donations from the Adolph Coors Foundation, the B & E Collins Foundation and Bettyjean Averitt. While the Quaintance Gallery transforms into a more seamless and professional space, Foothills Art Center will offer two exhibitions in the remaining galleries: Video Art Marathon: Identity, January 20–24; and Timmy Flynn’s Hardware Store, February 6–28. Finally, on the evening of March 12th, our newly-renovated main gallery will be revealed just in time for one of Foothills Art Center’s most beloved exhibitions, Colorado Clay, March 13–May 2.
Free Admission
Thanks to Target, Foothills Art Center will offer free admission for Video Art Marathon: Identity and Timmy Flynn’s Hardware Store, and every first Monday thereafter in 2010.
Video Art Marathon: Identity
January 20–24, 2010
Foothills Art Center is thrilled to present 22 new works by seven of New York’s exciting young video artists. While this thoroughly engaging art form originated in the 1960s and 1970s, today’s creative artists are breaking ground in the fast-evolving world of video technology. Not to be confused with filmmaking, video art instead can be thought of as “time-based painting.”
The video selections pertain to the struggle with personal identity and how we relate to ourselves, others and society. Whether the artist’s approach is whimsical or disconcerting, all of these works are thought-provoking and interesting. Don’t miss this opportunity—
Timmy Flynn’s Hardware Store
February 6–28, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, February 5, 5:30–8 pm
SCFD Family Free Day: Saturday, February 20, 11am–2pm
In line with the renovation taking place in our main gallery, Foothills Art Center presents Timmy Flynn’s Hardware Store. Based on Colorado artist Tim Flynn’s childhood dream to own his own hardware store, this group exhibition will be installed as such, complete with aisles of merchandise, a checkout counter and other authentic hardware store props. The “merchandise”
The work is extremely varied, from found object sculptures, hand-pulled prints, photography, jewelry, glass and kinetic sculptures to ceramics, paintings and artist-arranged collections of tools. The artists’ creativity with the theme is astonishing and thoroughly amusing.
