TMJ is simple way of saying temporomandibular joint is an anatomic structure but has come to be a definition of jaw joint dysfunction that is brought about by a number of different causes. TMJD have several symptoms that includes; noise and/or pain by the ears when moving the lower jaw (as in eating or yawning), persistent headaches, neck and back pain, diminished hearing, and sinus trouble. There are several treatment options for TMJ that your health care provider may recommend. Like many health problems, TMJ disorder does not have a standard treatment approach, not only dentists, but chiropractors, physical therapists, physicians, cranial osteopaths, and other alternative health care providers treat TMJ dysfunction, so don't expect agreement on what the problem is or what should be done about it.

One of the corrective approaches in reversing TMJ disorder is by mechanically repositioning the teeth and/or jaws permanently with braces to create a balanced bite and jaw joint relationship. In addition, crowns, fillings, bridges, splints, or removable partial dentures are also being used for the same purpose. Orthotics or sometimes referred to as splints may be fitted to either the upper or lower jaws, and in some cases to both. Once the patient is comfortable with this corrected jaw position, the teeth can then be restored with porcelain restorations.

You also need to observe proper posture and avoid doing things that can trigger the TMJ symptoms like holding the phone against your shoulder by tilting your head. Refrain from chewing a gum. Experts suggest that during the day make an effort to keep your teeth apart. It is ideal to sleep on your back in order to relieve the pressure from the face. Sorry guys but you also need to avoid some sexual practices and prolonged kissing.

Physical and muscle therapy is also vital in order to relieve the muscle tension and spasms by using moist heat, ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, jaw exercises, massage, muscle and joint manipulation, and trigger point therapy.

Treatment options for TMJ that should be considered to be the last resort is surgery.
