CHEYNEY, PA (Jan. 11, 2010) —Cheyney University welcomed several members of the
Congresional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) when they recently presented The SHOP
program to students.
The SHOP Program is an initiative of the Congressional Black Caucus to provide personal
finance and wealth planning information to students at HBCUs. The workshop in Carnegie
Hall, on the historic quadrangle, drew a standing-room only crowd.
CBCF staffer Stephanie Ebron engaged the students with an interactive power-point
presentation which covered a variety of personal financial management topics from
budgeting basics and credit to protecting against identity theft.
The students stayed engaged because Ms Ebron and her associates came from DC bearing
crucial information along with gifts. Everyone who attended was given a memo pad with an
attached calculator, and students who answered questions were rewarded with gift
certificates. After the formal presentation, students remained for networking with the
staffers over pizza and sodas. Many asked about the internship program sponsored by the
CBCF.
Cheyney has previously participated in the SHOP program with Professor Deanna Shelton
of the Business Administration program, serving as the liaison for the visits. She noted that
the response this year was comparable to that of previous years. The outstanding turn out
by Business students could be traced to the food and gifts, but students surveyed rated the
workshop as “excellent.”
session was favorable except they wanted it to be longer, and that more programs of this
nature would be welcomed.
