San Francisco, CA - The Beverly Fund Lung Cancer Foundation, a national grassroots lung cancer foundation headquartered in San Francisco has recently joined forces again with the California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). During the month of January, National Radon Action Month, the Beverly Fund is giving away free radon test kits to all Californians.
What is radon? It's a natural decay of uranium found in the earth's soil that seeps through the cracks in foundations and pipes and enters the home. It's an invisible gas and extremely toxic at high levels.
The EPA recommends fixing your home if radon levels are found at 4.0 or higher, but the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended in September 2009 after extensive studies, that the level of safety be lowered to 2.7 instead of 4.0.
Tracy Sestili, co-founder and CEO of the Beverly Fund says, "The only way to find out if your home has high radon levels is to test for it. But there are tens of thousands of homes at risk who never test for it. We believe that perhaps in offering the test kits for free that it will be an incentive for people to test their homes in this tough economy."
Over 215,000 people each are diagnosed with lung cancer and 160,000 die each year from the disease. It is estimated that over 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused by indoor radon.
Free test kits are available through the Beverly Fund Lung Cancer Foundation through January 31, 2010. All you need to do is send an email to info@beverlyfund.org with Radon2010 in the summary and your name and address. Offers is good while supplies last and is on a first come, first serve basis.
