January 09, 2010, Goa – Goa Centre for Alternative Photography (Goa–CAP) opens its new exhibition titled [ 2 9 9 7 9 2 4 5 4 ], displayed at the Galerie Daguerre from January 09 until Jan 11, 2010.  This   is the first exhibition in India to focus exclusively on the Pinhole Photographic art.  This exhibition also introduces the visitors to new, unconventional cameras made out of trash and match box never before seen in India. The pictures are dreamlike multi-layered arrangements while the lengthy process of creating each picture is as important as the final result.

Alternative photography artists from Goa, Edson Dias, P. Madhavan, Srinivas Mangipudi, Enith Perez, are exhibiting the collection of photographs taken by them through the simplest of all cameras, made out of One Rupee Matchbox.

This lens (glass) less camera if formed of a lightproof matchbox with a small opening, which allows the light to enter to form an Upside down and reversed image on film on the opposite side of the matchbox. Exposure time tend to be lengthier since only a small amount of light is admitted through the hole.

The handmade camera is the new future for photography and a refreshing response to today’s digital era. Faster, newer and stronger photography makes enables the artists and photographers to fidget with images on a computer screen and share them across the world in a flicker of seconds. The simplicity with which the images are created using a matchbox is therefore more charming and captivating.

Exhibition [ 2 9 9 7 9 2 4 5 4 ] is an attempt to honor the magic, uncertainty, and mystery of this early process in contemporary practice.

This exhibition also addresses the diminishing efforts to preserve culture, nature and art in the face of modernization and raises issues of global importance.

Goa Centre for Alternative Photography (Goa–CAP) is also hosting a series of events in coming weeks to educate people about the alternative photography especially pinhole photography. Included in this series of events is a discussion with the four exhibiting artists to discuss the creative process that is unique to alternative photography.

These events are free and open to the public while donations are accepted and appreciated.

Highway Hypothesis
Goa scenic resources are contributing much to our economic development by attracting tourists, residents, new green industries and cultural facilities. Natural beauty is the most important criteria for tourist both domestic and international to choose Goa for an outdoor recreation.  The more a community does to enhance its unique natural, scenic, historic, and architectural assets, the more tourists it attracts.
However the increasing billboards and other forms of outdoor advertisements are becoming a matter of increasing concern to many Goans and tourists visiting Goa. It  is detrimental to the preservation of these resources, and consequently to the economic base of the state. These visual clutters simply denigrate our history, culture and subtract from the natural, scenic beauty that attracts visitors here in the first place. Billboards are both a symptom and cause of urban blight & reflect the madness in the society.
The natural beauty of Goa is one of our most valuable assets - covering it up with a bunch of gigantic signs blemishes the magnificent landscape of GOA
