Vandalia, OH — My Child's Locket asks "You are traveling on a family vacation when your young son has an accident and needs a blood transfusion. Quick, do you know his blood type?
Your daughter is taking a regimen of antibiotics to fight off a persistent infection. How many times will you have to write out the medication amounts and times for each babysitter?
In a worst-case scenario, your child is abducted and police need photos and other identifying information to help their investigation. How quickly could you provide this?"
My Child’s Locket, a new Web-based service, aims to help parents keep their children healthy and safe by keeping medical, contact, and identifying information at their fingertips on a convenient, secure Web site. Instead of digging through files or having to place frantic phone calls, parents can retrieve and share information on medications, blood type, allergies, height and weight, distinguishing features, even photos with the click of a mouse.
“We’ve created a one-stop shop for parents with a user-friendly, secure site that parents can call up wherever there is Internet service,” says MyChildsLocket.com creator Jay Osterholt. “This is meant to simplify busy parents’ lives.” To that end, one of the site’s features allows busy parents to print out contact information, bedtimes, medicines, etc., for the evening babysitter or the grandparents watching the kids for the weekend.
Osterholt knows that the security of the site will concern parents. “We’ve used the latest encryption technology. Only parents can access their own accounts,” he says. The convenience of the Internet, meanwhile, means that a parent can instantly access critical information at the doctor’s office, hospital, or police station, anywhere where Internet service is available, on any day and at any hour.
My Child’s Locket’s creators plan to introduce additional features in the near future, including an allergy card that children can bring with them to school and allergy stickers that can be placed on bicycles, car seats, etc., for emergency medical personnel. They also plan to provide valuable messages to parents such as AMBER alerts, consumer/product alerts, and sexual predator alerts.
Osterholt says the number of child runaways and abductions motivated him to create the site. Each year, some 450,000 children run away while 300,000 children are abducted by family and non-family members. “Our number-one goal is to protect your child and have information readily available—24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year—for your child in an emergency,” says Osterholt. “Don’
