LOS ANGELES – "The Doctors’ Prescription for Healthy Living" magazine (also known as "Healthy Living") announced today that they have compared twelve popular all-purpose cleaners and rated them in terms of their health and environmental impact. The resulting table—which shows Earth Friendly Products to be the “greenest”
"Healthy Living" evaluated the cleaning products based on toxic ingredients and petrochemical content, as well as environmental impact created by their parent companies in terms of distribution, local manufacturing, energy use, environmental programs, and carbon offsets.
"Healthy Living" evaluated long-established brands including Fantastic, Formula 409, Lysol, Mr. Clean, Simple Green, and Windex as well as newer brands Bi-O-Kleen, Earth Friendly Products, GreenWorks, Lestoil, Method, and Seventh Generation.
"Healthy Living" reported that most of the cleaners evaluated contained toxic chemicals such as petroleum distillates (nerve toxins), butyl cellosolve (a kidney toxin and neurotoxin), ethylene glycol (a liver and kidney toxin), quaternary compounds (which can release formaldehyde and endanger marine organisms), monoethanolamine (which can contribute to cancer), and kathon CG (a possible neurotoxin).
"Healthy Living" reported that cleaning products do not always list ingredients on labels, which can make it more difficult for consumers to decide between products. “We are all trying to green our homes and make them safer,” says the "Healthy Living" article. “Certainly green household cleaning products play an important role. The chemicals in household cleaners are known to be toxic to the kidneys, liver and nervous system. Some could cause cancer. In addition, many of the products use exorbitant amounts of natural resources in their production, manufacture and distribution. In this chart we reveal their toxic ingredient, often not disclosed on labels. And we looked at the companies behind the brands.”
The Parsley Plus and Orange Plus All-Surface Cleaners by Earth Friendly Products were determined to be the greenest products in the bunch as they contained no toxic ingredients or petrochemicals and because the parent company has regional manufacturing plants (which reduces energy needs for transportation)
Earth Friendly Products’ CEO and owner Van Vlahakis said, “We are proud that our products continue to stand out as the purest, and greenest products on the shelves. Our California plant produces 60 percent of its own energy with an extensive solar panel system, and by recently expanding our facilities, we added over 100 green jobs in the U.S. over the last 12 months and plan to add another 100 jobs in 2010. At Earth Friendly Products, we are dedicated to the highest standards when it comes to health and the welfare of the planet.”
