At the moment, times are hard, we’re at the end of a long recession. Surely a lot of you have felt the pinch and have had to cut back on a lot of things, but if you’re still smarting from having to give up those essential house renovations then maybe now is the time to think again! It may be a tough decision to spend the money, but that doesn’t mean we have to put up with a fall-down home or a half done bathroom! More and more people are realizing that they could re-do their entire houses for a fraction of the price, especially now with the economic downturn just about done and the US government adding tax incentives, you just have to find the right home improvement contractor who will be willing to work with you.
If you want to renovate or remodel your home, add a bathroom, or redo a kitchen, there are things you can do in order to squeeze every last penny out of that budget, and some of them are so obvious, you may not even have thought of trying them!
Believe it or not, the recession has allowed people like you to negotiate more affordable options with various home improvement providers! Many homeowners don’t move up, and are choosing to stick with their current home, so why not give your home a much needed sprucing up? Renovating a home is becoming increasingly popular among fellow recession suffers, because they’re realizing that if they take advantage of the savings now that many contractors are providing, they could be reaping the benefits later. Even the home improvement contractors have been hurting and need to bring in business, so many will be quite willing to bid and give a reasonable quote for various smaller projects, up to and including “meeting or beating” other competitors written quotes. Many contractors are willing to start on smaller projects today, do a great job to earn your loyal business and referrals for the larger projects that will eventually come in later when times get better.
It would be wise to “shop” around and start looking for all the deals and offers that many of the home improvement contractors are offering. You can check on those coupons in the mail, but we need to be thinking bigger! So you need to start off with a good plan of action, which includes everything you want to achieve within your home. This is a given with any renovation project, but it is often over-looked. By creating a plan, you can set reasonable project budgets and deadlines for completion, so you’ll have something guiding you along. Often what occurs in renovations is people forget to do one thing or another and once one room is complete, they give up. With a plan, you know exactly what to do and when to do it, so you’ll always be motivated to continue.
Another fantastic tip is to check for federal tax credits for energy home improvements. You can also check for local reimbursements and state incentives, as you never know, you might be entitled to some much needed extra cash that a local municipalities has to offer! Currently the federal government is offering up $1500 in tax credit incentives to add, change or update windows, roofing, insulation, hot water heaters and more, etc.
If you’re just looking to make a change, any change! Then perhaps you should think about smaller cosmetic changes? You’d be surprised at the amount of difference a custom paint job can make. It’s a lot cheaper than a full scale renovation, and if you choose the right visual effect, it could really make an impact and yet be a small investment. Simple things like re-painting your front door with a brighter color, new door knobs or lamp shades in rooms, hanging baskets, a lot of simple changes can make a big difference. Remember – you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get an expensive looking outcome.
If you want to go expansive on your renovation, then there’s one thing you need to learn how to do: negotiate! Everyone loves a deal, so don’t be afraid, you’d be surprised how many contractors are up for negotiating their prices. When it comes negotiating with any contractor, many have been known to charge high prices so that they can get maximum income on their work. Knowing this gives you some leeway to push the price down a little bit in order save yourself some money, without putting them out of business!
Of course, there are additional ways you can save money on your renovation, you could even source your own materials! Whatever you do, you’re sure to save some money, because let’s face it, we’re in tough times right now, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be allowed to have a gorgeous looking house should it? With the right tips and the right home improvement contractor, you’re sure to turn your house into the home of your dreams.
