Columbia, SC - (January 7, 2010) -  The Columbia Regional Sports Council is once again pleased to announce that several rowing crews from around the nation will once again return to the Richland County Rowing Center for winter and spring training. Teams include Georgetown University, Bucknell University, Syracuse University as well as Tabor Academy, and St. Mark’s School of Massachusetts.  Georgetown University once again starts the 2010 training sessions off with their seventh consecutive trip to Columbia.

More than 250 rowers will enjoy three miles of unobstructed flat-water found on the Broad River.  The Richland County Rowing Center, on the Broad River, is the launching base for these training sessions.  Georgetown’s rowers arrived in Columbia and began training this past Tuesday and will be in Columbia until January 11.  Bucknell University arrives January 11 to begin training and will be in Columbia until January 18.  Syracuse University and Bucknell return to Columbia March 13 - 20, while Massachusetts area schools Tabor Academy and St. Mark’s School both are scheduled return to Columbia in March as well

Hosting teams of this nature generates and awareness of Columbia, SC and provides an economic impact upon the community.  Commenting on the benefits of hosting the athletes and staff members, Executive Director for the Columbia Regional Sports Council, Scott Powers states, “This is valuable business for our community. Since 2003, these teams have directly generated over $1,188,400 on food, lodging, shopping and entertainment.  This program continues to grow as more teams learn about the Broad River, the Richland County rowing facilities and the Columbia Rowing Club, which works hard to be the perfect host for these teams.  We look forward to making a friendly and lasting impression on these and future crews.”

For training schedules and to see these teams in action at the Richland County Rowing Center, please contact Columbia Rowing Club training coordinator, George Park at 803-429-2597.
