Passengers were confined to their cabins after contracting norovirus, with one describing their 14 night Christmas cruise as the "cruise from hell". On its 12 day cruise to the Canaries in December 2009 180 passengers on the Boudicca were taken ill with norovirus. On a four day cruise to Amsterdam 50 Boudicca passengers were diagnosed with norovirus. And on the December 22 cruise to Madeira, a huge 289 passengers were taken ill with the stomach bug and the ship had to return a day early.
One couple on board the Madeira cruise spent four days confined to their cabin onboard the Boudicca and missed three of the six islands visited by the Fred Olsen cruise ship.
A second Fred Olsen Cruise Lines ship – the Balmoral – saw more than 250 passengers taken ill with norovirus on its December 21 cruise to the Canary Islands. It is also not the first time passengers have been taken ill onboard the Balmoral. Last February 200 holidaymakers were taken ill on their cruise and in September 78 passengers onboard the Balmoral were diagnosed with norovirus.
Noroviruses are the most common cause of gastroenteritis which involves often violent vomiting and diarrhoea.
At this time we believe that Fred Olsen Cruise Lines are offering passengers on the Boudicca a small refund to cover returning from the cruise early and the inconvenience caused. However, passengers are not being offered compensation for the days lost due to being ill on the cruise ship.
Holiday Ilness Compensation
