The devastating effects of this prolonged recession are visible throughout many of Connecticut's urban centers today!
Just as obvious is the growing number of abandoned and foreclosed properties littering many neighborhoods and there is very little interest or incentive to revitalize these buildings!
The solution to repairing these buildings and revitalizing the neighborhoods is seeding these properties with a new generation of "Urban Homesteaders,"
We believe through "Homesteading,"
Our intention is to provide safe and decent homes for families to live and raise their children. We also want to provide some economic benefit through property ownership while creating stable neighborhoods in Connecticut's urban settings.
"Turning Lemons Into Lemonade" is an old phrase that works perfectly as a motto for this program.
Owner occupied dwellings are better cared for than absentee controlled properties in most cases. To seed ownership responsibilities onto a new generation of homeowners is a challenge we feel we can accomplish. To do so, we envision a full support staff and an extensive business network providing all the required services readily available to assist these Urban Homesteaders with their housing needs on a daily basis.
Our neighborhoods and their residents deserve an opportunity to enjoy a better quality of life. Homesteading will help significantly in accomplishing this long sought after goal!
The plan begins with updating the existing Urban Homesteading Statutes already in place and utilizing the Multi-Family building as the program model in order to also derive an economic utility from the ownership experience. This will assure true affordable entry-level housing opportunities in many of Connecticut's urban neighborhoods that are in such desperate straits and need this program.
Please make an effort to participate in this round table housing discussion.
