Dr. Roger Barrios
Professor Roger Barrios, Chief of the anesthesiology department at Hospital Herrera Llerandi, one of the leading hospitals in Guatemala, made a presentation about Bispectral index (BIS) Monitoring to the department of anesthesiology of Min-Sheng Hospital. He had been invited by Dr. Yao Wei-Cheng, the Director of the anesthesiology department at Min-Sheng who was keen to share this information with his staff.
BIS Monitoring is a way to measure the level of consciousness during anesthesia. It gives an indication of how “deep” under anesthesia the patient is. The use of BIS Monitoring during surgery may reduce the incidence of Intraoperative Awareness in high risk procedures or patients. It also helps avoid unnecessary medicine and overdosing, and enables a faster discharge from the recovery room.
Developed in America nearly fifteen years ago, Bis Monitors are now a fixture in many hospitals across the US and Europe where they are used in operating rooms as well as Intensive Care Units to titrate sedative drugs. Dr. Barrios was one of the first to introduce BIS Monitoring in Central America, and has been using the technique for many years.
