WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - The Westlake Village office of full-service engineering, architectural and survey firm Huitt-Zollars has been awarded the civil engineering and LEED consulting contract by Kona Heights, LLC for the $30 million first phase of a planned 200-home residential community on the Big Island of Hawaii, announced company Vice President Jim D. Faul.
The 11-acre first phase of the Kona Heights development, borders the western coast of the island immediately north of the Keauhou Resort Community in the city of Kailua-Kona. It will include 65 single family homes and a public neighborhood park. Incorporated into the masterplan is the protection of six ancient Hawaiian burial grounds on the western perimeter of the housing development.
In addition to providing comprehensive civil engineering and construction services for all on and off site infrastructure improvements, including new streets, recreational areas, water, sewer, and storm drains, Huitt-Zollars will act as the primary LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) consultant on the project. The Kona Heights development will feature numerous water and energy conservation measures including solar power, water collection and the use of recycled materials in the construction process.
According to Faul, the design and construction of Kona Heights will adhere to United States Green Building Council guidelines to create the first LEED certified residential development in the State of Hawaii. A leader in major sustainable development, Huitt-Zollars' recent projects include Hangar 25 at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, Calif., the first aviation hangar in the United States to receive LEED Platinum certification.
Construction on the first phase of is expected to begin in late 2010. The project architect is KTGY Architects in Irvine, Calif.
