What happening?
The Bucs and Falcons have nothing but pride and jobs to play for now, but this game is still worth a look because it offers even casual fans the chance to watch two of the game's most promising young quarterbacks.
If the Bucs and Falcons are going to make a clean break anytime soon from the NFL's suddenly long list of also-rans, it'll likely be Josh Freeman and Matt Ryan leading the way.
Both are still in the developmental stages of their careers, but their respective teams are counting heavily on them, and both face a rather big test this week.
Ryan is going up against a Tampa Bay defense that has been red hot since coach Raheem Morris took over the play-calling duties following a Nov. 22 loss to New Orleans.
The Falcons, meanwhile, will throw the NFL's 23rd-ranked defense at Freeman, who has run hot and cold with his accuracy but never seems to be shaken by mistakes or challenging game situations.
Both Atlanta and Tampa Bay are coming off victories and are looking to build momentum going into the offseason, and while Falcons coach Mike Smith's job seems safe the same cannot be said of Morris.
The Bucs have improved markedly the last few weeks under Morris but the Bucs may opt to make a change if they don't get a good feel about the future off this final game of the season.
The Bottom Line
The Bucs are on a roll but they're not even sure themselves if they're just hot or if they've really turned the corner. This is a chance for Tampa to prove in front of its home crowd that the Bucs are really on the right track again. Don't look for them to waste the opportunity.
