A Provocative Cautionary Tale Of A Future America Without Immigration Reform

America Libre, a recently released novel by award winning author Raul Ramos y Sanchez, envisions the consequences of a U.S. without immigration reform.

Dec. 31, 2009 - PRLog -- San Diego, California – With immigration reform poised to become a center stage issue in 2010 following the introduction of a new immigration reform bill (HR 4321) into the House of Representatives, a recently released novel envisions a future U.S. that shuns immigration reform – with dire consequences.

In the dystopian tradition of George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World comes America Libre by Raul Ramos y Sanchez. This cautionary tale envisions a future U.S. where the death of a Latina bystander during a botched drug bust in San Antonio triggers a tragic chain of events. Eventually, long-simmering tensions over immigration explode into an escalating cycle of violence between supremacist vigilantes and Hispanic separatists. To separate the warring factions, a congressional demagogue succeeds in passing a resolution branding Hispanics as “Class H” citizens and herding them into Quarantine Zones and Relocation Communities. In response, Latinos across the U.S. put aside their differences and coalesce into a national liberation movement seeking to reclaim U.S. territory once part of Mexico and Spain. The novel culminates in a day of reckoning as the insurgents launch a national offensive. Along the way, the award-winning novel explores the consequences of some of today’s most provocative issues.

Immigration Reform
In America Libre, continued federal inaction on immigration reform leads to the concentration of Latinos into segregated “safe haven” enclaves in many cities. With the rapid growth of the Latino population and a long-standing economic recession, these teeming barrios become a breeding ground for discontent among restless, idle youth—and a battle zone for supremacist vigilantes and Hispanic separatists. The novel’s themes are especially newsworthy in light of the recent immigration reform bill (HR 4321) proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Growth of Extremism
Extremist groups in the U.S. have grown by 40% since 2000. During the same period, Hispanics have become the number one victims of hate crimes, primarily as a backlash against illegal immigration. Following this trend, America Libre portrays a troubling future when supremacists, emboldened by their growing numbers and the inflammatory anti-immigrant rhetoric, escalate their hatred beyond the current war of words.

The Role of the Media
With their profits fast eroding from web and cable competition, America Libre envisions the major broadcast networks seizing on bulletins and special news reports to bolster flagging viewership. Desperate to hype the news, the networks exaggerate the extent of the barrio riots, fanning the flames of discontent and deepening the growing chasm between Latinos and mainstream Americans.

Returning War Veterans
Central character Mano Suarez is an Afghan veteran who believes he has put his troubling wartime memories behind him. But the exploding ethnic violence at home ignites his combat instincts—with devastating results.

Synopsis:
Former U.S. Army Ranger Mano Suarez is out of work and struggling to support his family in a Los Angeles barrio wracked by riots and supremacist vigilante attacks. Mano’s troubles seem over when he finally lands a job. But Mano’s new employer is about to change his life. She’s a rich Latina with a radical agenda: to redraw the map of the United States. Under her spell, Mano is drawn into an armed rebellion and soon finds himself questioning his marriage, his family, and everything he’s believed about patriotism.
