It began innocently. Suffering from migraines, Patricia Holloran, RN, was prescribed Stadol, a drug she thought was nonaddictive. Turns out her information was wrong! Soon Holloran was pocketing half-used or unused vials of Stadol at her hospital job. After a visit from two agents from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, Drug Control Division, the former labor and delivery nurse had to admit she was an addict. Her experiences led her to write Impaired: A Nurse’s Story of Addiction and Recovery.
The discussion on this ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses book begins Jan. 6 at www.advanceweb.com/
Beginning March 3, ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses will tackle We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese by Elizabeth Norman. Norman interviewed nurses held prisoners of war in the Philippines in World War II, recounting their bravery and horrendous hardships.
About the ADVANCE for Nurses Online Book Club for Nurses
The ADVANCE for Nurses online book club discusses six books annually, covering a different book every 2 months. After reading Impaired and We Band of Angels, join us May 5 as we read Josie's Story: A Mother's Inspiring Crusade to Make Medical Care Safe by Sorrel King, of interest to every nurse who values patient safety. July 7, we look at Alzheimer’s and its effects on the person and his family when we read Still Alice by Lisa Genova. Marking the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in September, the book club reads Nursing in the Storm: Voices from Hurricane Katrina, co-authored by Denise Danna, DNS, RN.
Similar to a traditional face-to-face book group, ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses members read the book and join in the online conversation, complemented by a podcasted interview or video with the author or a related expert.
