The DC Council Acknowledges the Efforts of Sibley’s Sullivan Center for Breast Health

Dec. 29, 2009 - PRLog -- A Ceremonial Resolution by the Council of the District of Columbia was presented to Sibley Memorial Hospital’s Sullivan Center for Breast Health at their October 15, 2009 Breast Conference. The Council resolved to declare October as Breast Cancer Awareness month in the District to educate residents about the importance of early detection, and to acknowledge the efforts of the Sullivan Center for Breast Health and its physicians in the fight against breast cancer.

As stated in the Resolution, DC ranks highest in the country for breast cancer mortality, and cancer is the second leading cause of death among District residents.  There have been an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 40,170 deaths in 2009 alone. However, there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

Early detection of breast cancer leads to early treatment, which leads to higher success rates. Mammograms are a leading tool for early breast cancer detection. The Sullivan Center for Breast Health has emerged as a national model in providing expert, comprehensive care using the most minimally invasive treatments possible. The Center provides free psycho-social programs, support groups, counseling and nutrition consults.

Annually, the Sullivan Center donates $500,000 in uncompensated care to help women with treatment and provides 100 free mammograms to uninsured and underserved women. The Center treats more breast cancer than any other facility in the Washington, DC metro area.
