Zimbabwe maize output rises: Article about the improving Agro-sector

The Finance Ministry has reported that  1.2 million tonnes of maize was produced in 2008-2009 season which is almost double than the previous year. It is very important for Zimbabwe to show improvements in it's agriculture output so that it can rely less on imports. Since local currency has depreciated significantly, government finds it hard to buy food grains for other countries. Many people reading the article may know that a decade back Zimbabwe was a much more thriving economy and was often considered as the bread bowl of the region. But then government's seizure of white-owned farms and the collapse of the economy and infrastructure.

FAO and WFP have attributed the good harvest to improvements in the agriculture sector, good rainfall and the liberal agricultural policies. Zimbabwe's national maize requirement is about 1.8 million tons.
