An open Letter to Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates

Dear Secretary Gates:

December 28, 2009

I read with interest this morning your proposal regarding Nation-Building, and your concept to establish a $2 billion fund for “training security forces, preventing conflicts and stabilizing violence-torn societies around the world”

Sir I would like to comment about your proposal!

First, I think it’s time you in government, considered the American people.

We live in a country that is prone to violence, as of December 2008, we had 1,610,446 sentenced prisoners in the US.

We are a nation that is fast becoming a third world society, the number of Americans receiving food stamps reached 35 million in June 2009 the highest number since the program began in 1962, with an average monthly benefit of $133.12 per person. As of late November 2009, one in eight Americans and one in four children are using food stamps and the program rate is growing at 20,000 people a day. Recipients must have near-poverty incomes to qualify for benefits.

Sir, poverty is a reality in America, just as it is for millions of other human beings on the planet. According to the US Census Bureau, 35.9 million people live below the poverty line in America, including 12.9 million children.

America infrastructure: as of 2005, we have 155,144 of America’s 592,473 bridges, (26.2 percent) that are rated structurally deficient, or functionally obsolete. Must we wait for more bridges to collapse and more American lives lost through these tragic collapses before you in government act on our behalf?

Unemployment: Statistics from the labor department show that as of November, the number of unemployed persons, was 15.4 million, however, that does not take into account, many areas of the economy that are not included, for example, those working fewer hours, those who are now working for much less, and those whose benefits have run out, including these groups of people, the actual unemployed, including the under-employed is 17.2 % or close to 60, million people.

Foreclosures; Mortgage defaults are now in excess of 23% of all loans, at the end of the third quarter 2006 total U.S. mortgage debt outstanding was $10.7 trillion, with 75 million homeowners. Of these 75 million homeowners almost 18 million of them are now behind 60 days and more.

Sir your proposal for 2 Billion dollars, would go a long way to eliminate some of our economic concerns, for instance, we could begin to rebuild our own bridges rather than build more bridges in Afghanistan. We could put 2 billion to work in our own economy, creating jobs. We could help those who are behind on their mortgages, by providing them sufficient equity to obtain new loans. We could eliminate those who are using food stamps by giving them an opportunity to earn a living.

In closing: Secretary Gates, first and foremost, Nation building should begin with the US. Recent polls show that 68% of America disapproves in the direction government is taking.

What we want: We want our problems at home resolved, we want jobs, returned to our people, we want realistic mortgages with realistic terms, and we want hunger eliminated. In short, we want our dream back!
