Home Centers Friends Or Enemey?

Are the home center the best place to shop in this time of economic crisis

Dec. 28, 2009 - PRLog -- I remember when I was growing up in orange county California during 1970 and 1980 whenever my parents were in need of any work to be done around the house they would simply call our neighborhood plumber & flooring or electrical contractor who we have known for a long time.
On Sundays we would go to our local hardware store or the nursery and get all that was needed for our home. Today it seems there are no longer as many family owned hardware store or nurseries and most of the friendly faces I grew up knowing are now replaced with massive cold warehouses with employees who are not as friendly helpful or knowledgeable.
Today there are more & more super stores & less & less family owned businesses & I think this country is poorer for it, as these super stores move into local economies they put the small business out & if we are lucky they will stay but in some cases when they feel the town is too small they close their doors & leave the local economy in a worth shape then they found it in the first place.
I guess for the most part we don’t really think about these sort of things & why should we our life is so busy & full of challenges we really don’t care were we buy our product from & as long as it is convenient why not, after all its not our jobs or business being put out so why should we care.
In my humble opinion in these desperate times our country needs more work rather than more self check out stands. As more small business get shut down & most of our work & manufacturing is getting outsourced what shape will this country be in the next decade?
So I have to ask my self how are these home centers really helping us in these tough economic times sure they got everything under one roof but at what cost?
They put small family owned businesses out of business just to replace them with less helpful & knowledgeable staff and to further reward us they make us do our own cashiering & they tell us it’s for faster service.
So let me ask you is it really for faster service or is it simply the fewer employees the less cost of doing business and more profit for their company.
I am afraid to think when all these small family owned business are no longer around the big home centers can charge whatever they want & consumers won’t have much of a choice.
In 1989 I started my own flooring company in orange county California & I have to say it was the proudest moment in my life next to the birth of my two beautiful kids not only because I was the master of my own destiny but because I was doing something I enjoyed & it brought a great deal of satisfaction to me when I was able to help my neighbors convert their house in to a home.
Over the past 20 years I have added design & staging plus complete kitchen & bath remodel.
I have to say as big as the home centers are I have always managed to give better prices but most importantly a better service.
As a small business we specialize in our trade so you will always get a professional service & workmanship plus lower price since we have a much lower overhead.

So the next time you’re in the market for home improvement services all of us little guys would appreciate your consideration & remember the job you save today could save your job tomorrow.
